Activity summary

GK5 also known as glycerol kinase 5 catalyzes the phosphorylation of glycerol to produce glycerol-3-phosphate. This enzyme mass is approximately 61 kDa. GK5 is expressed in various tissues with significant levels detected in the adipose tissue. It shares functional similarities with other members of the glycerol kinase family which play an important role in lipid and carbohydrate metabolism.

Biological function summary

GK5 contributes to lipid metabolism and energy homeostasis. GK5 functions as a monomer and it regulates the conversion of glycerol integrating signals from hormonal and nutritional cues to maintain metabolic balance. This regulation affects energy mobilization and storage connecting GK5 activity to broader metabolic needs of the cell.

Pathways

GK5 integrates into the glycerolipid metabolism pathway. It acts alongside related enzymes like glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase which transforms glycerol-3-phosphate to dihydroxyacetone phosphate linking to glycolysis and gluconeogenesis. GK5 activity influences the balance between fat storage and breakdown which is important for meeting cellular energy demands.

Associated diseases and disorders

GK5 has an association with metabolic disorders such as diabetes and obesity. Its function affects insulin signaling and lipid accumulation implicating it in the pathogenesis of insulin resistance and adiposity. GK5 interactions with proteins like adiponectin highlight its contributions to the complex network that governs metabolic health.
