GNAI3 GNAI1 and GNAI2 also known as Gi alpha subunits belong to the G protein family which are involved in intracellular signaling. These proteins have molecular masses of approximately 40 kDa. They are expressed in a variety of tissues including the brain heart and immune cells. Each subunit interacts with the beta and gamma subunits of G proteins to form a complex which plays a role in signal transduction by inhibiting adenylate cyclase activity leading to decreased levels of cAMP.
Biological function summary

Gi alpha subunits regulate various physiological processes such as neurotransmission and immune response. They are integral parts of receptor-mediated signaling pathways binding to G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) on cell surfaces. This interaction triggers changes in cAMP levels which in turn affects cellular responses to external stimuli. Gi alpha proteins serve as molecular switches turning on or off specific signaling pathways.

The alpha chain contains the guanine nucleotide binding site and alternates between an active, GTP-bound state and an inactive, GDP-bound state (PubMed : 18434541, PubMed : 8774883).
