GNG13 also known as Guanine Nucleotide-Binding Protein Subunit Gamma-13 is a part of the larger family of G protein gamma subunits. It participates in signal transduction by coupling cell surface receptors with internal signaling pathways. GNG13 has a molecular mass of approximately 8.7 kDa. Researchers have found it expressed in tissues such as the retina and olfactory epithelium where it plays a role in sensory perception and signal transmission.
Biological function summary

GNG13 functions as a component of the heterotrimeric G protein complex which includes alpha and beta subunits. Within these complexes GNG13 works to regulate the response of cells to various external signals. Its presence in the retina suggests a function in visual signal processing. Additionally in the olfactory system GNG13 contributes to the detection of odor molecules helping organisms respond to environmental cues.

Pathways

Information about GNG13 indicates significant involvement in the visual transduction and olfactory signaling pathways. Within the visual pathway GNG13 interacts with proteins like GNRH1 which is critical for transmitting light signals to the brain. In the olfactory pathway GNG13 works alongside other signaling proteins to convey information about smells to the central nervous system facilitating adaptive and survival-oriented behavioral responses.

Evidence links GNG13 dysfunction to usher syndrome and retinitis pigmentosa. Usher syndrome known for causing a combination of hearing loss and visual impairment suggests possible interactions with proteins such as USH2A which have roles in sensory processing. Retinitis pigmentosa a progressive retinal disorder ties GNG13 to retinal cell degeneration underlining its importance in retinal health and function. Further study into GNG13 and its interacting proteins may reveal new therapeutic targets.
