GNL1 also known as Nucleolar GTP-binding protein 1 is a protein with a molecular weight of approximately 67 kDa. It is mainly localized in the nucleolus of the cell where it is involved in ribosome biogenesis. The protein has a role in nucleolar processes with expression noted in various tissues which suggests a universal function across different cell types.
GNL1 functions as a GTPase participating in the assembly and maturation of the ribosomal subunits. This role places it as a part of the Preribosomal Complex. GNL1 facilitates ribosomal RNA processing which is essential for proper protein synthesis within the cell. The protein's involvement in these nucleolar activities supports its significance in maintaining cellular homeostasis.
GNL1 plays an integral role in the Nucleocytoplasmic Transport and Ribosome Biogenesis pathway. It works closely alongside proteins like Nucleophosmin (NPM1) during ribosome construction. The proper interaction of GNL1 with other nucleolar proteins ensures the seamless production of functional ribosomes which are important for cellular functions such as growth and division.
GNL1 has associations with certain types of cancer due to its critical role in cell proliferation. Altered expression levels of GNL1 may contribute to tumorigenesis particularly in cancers like leukemia. The protein's interaction with Tumor Suppressor Proteins such as p53 highlights its involvement in oncogenic pathways. Dysregulation of GNL1 and its complex network of interactions should be further studied to understand its potential as a therapeutic target.

Lane 1: HeLa (human epithelial cell line from cervix adenocarcinoma) whole cell lysate at 50 µg
