Biological function summary
GRASP55 controls various cellular processes including the trafficking of proteins and lipids within the cell. It is part of the GRASP complex along with GRASP65 facilitating membrane tethering and fusion events. The protein's function is also linked to its ability to regulate Golgi's response to cellular stress or changes in environment impacting secretion and growth factor availability. In some conditions GRASP55 can influence processes such as autophagy underlining its diverse biological actions within the cell.
Pathways
GRASP55 integrates into significant cellular pathways like the secretory pathway and the autophagy pathway. It interacts with key proteins like golgins and Rab GTPases to assist in vesicle tethering and transport. GRASP55 also closely interacts with p62 a protein that plays a critical role in the selective autophagy pathway. This positions GRASP55 as a contributor to not only the routine processing of cellular materials but also cellular adaptation to stress through autophagy modulation.
