Biological function summary
The ionotropic receptor family includes GluK3 which forms a functional protein complex known for mediating excitatory neurotransmission. The activity of GluK3 involves the binding of glutamate leading to the opening of cation channels and allowing the flow of sodium and potassium ions. This process results in the depolarization of neurons contributing to synaptic plasticity and excitatory synaptic activity in the brain. The precise functioning of GluK3 is important for maintaining normal synaptic transmission and neuronal communication.
Pathways
The GRIK3/GluK3 protein significantly contributes to the glutamatergic synapse pathway and influences the long-term potentiation (LTP) pathway. GluK3 plays a role in regulating synaptic strength and plasticity by modulating neurotransmitter release and postsynaptic responses.
