Growth hormone also known as somatotropin is a protein hormone with a molecular mass of approximately 22 kDa. It is synthesized and secreted by the somatotroph cells located in the anterior pituitary gland. Growth hormone functions by binding to specific receptors on target cells initiating a cascade of intracellular signaling. These signaling pathways primarily involve the JAK-STAT pathway. Growth hormone stimulates liver cells to produce insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) which mediates the majority of the growth-promoting effects.
