Biological function summary
Enzymes from the GST family like GSTA5 play integral roles in protecting cells from oxidative damage. By facilitating the conjugation of reduced glutathione GSTA5 contributes to neutralizing reactive oxygen species (ROS) that can harm cellular components. While GSTA5 is not part of a larger complex its activity is essential for maintaining a balance between cellular defense mechanisms and toxicant processing particularly in organs with high detoxification demands.
Pathways
GSTA5's activity is central to the drug metabolism and detoxification pathways. It supports phase II biotransformation processes where it interacts with other GST family members such as GSTP1 and GSTM1 which assists in the detoxification of harmful substances. This process ultimately leads to the excretion of toxins and protection against their detrimental effects on cellular function thereby playing a critical part in safeguarding cellular health.
