Supplementary information

GSTA5 also known as Glutathione S-transferase A5 belongs to the glutathione S-transferase (GST) family which is a group of enzymes involved in detoxification processes. It has a molecular mass of approximately 26 kDa. These enzymes function by catalyzing the conjugation of glutathione to a variety of exogenous and endogenous compounds facilitating their solubility and excretion. GSTA5 is mostly expressed in the liver but researchers have also detected its presence in other tissues such as the kidneys and lungs.
Biological function summary

Enzymes from the GST family like GSTA5 play integral roles in protecting cells from oxidative damage. By facilitating the conjugation of reduced glutathione GSTA5 contributes to neutralizing reactive oxygen species (ROS) that can harm cellular components. While GSTA5 is not part of a larger complex its activity is essential for maintaining a balance between cellular defense mechanisms and toxicant processing particularly in organs with high detoxification demands.

Pathways

GSTA5's activity is central to the drug metabolism and detoxification pathways. It supports phase II biotransformation processes where it interacts with other GST family members such as GSTP1 and GSTM1 which assists in the detoxification of harmful substances. This process ultimately leads to the excretion of toxins and protection against their detrimental effects on cellular function thereby playing a critical part in safeguarding cellular health.

Researchers have linked GSTA5 to conditions involving oxidative stress and toxic exposure such as liver cirrhosis and certain cancers. Altered expression or function of GSTA5 can result in compromised detoxification processes which increases susceptibility to these conditions. In liver-related disorders GSTA5 often interacts with enzymes like cytochrome P450s which are pivotal in drug metabolism. Understanding the role of GSTA5 in these contexts aids in the development of potential therapeutic strategies targeting detoxification pathways.
