Supplementary information

GSTT1 or Glutathione S-transferase theta-1 functions mechanically as an enzyme involved in detoxification. It catalyzes the conjugation of glutathione to a wide array of substrates assisting in the metabolism and elimination of toxic compounds. This protein is part of the glutathione S-transferase family and usually presents as a 26 kDa unit. It expresses in the liver kidney and other tissues indicating a broad role in processing harmful substances.
Biological function summary

GSTT1 participates in cellular defense mechanisms by protecting cells against oxidative stress and free radicals. It does not form part of a larger protein complex but its activity can affect other detoxification enzymes in a cascade of reactions. Its function helps maintain cellular homeostasis and enhance the organism's ability to handle chemical stressors. The enzyme's role in metabolizing endogenous and exogenous compounds implicates it in basic cellular defense.

Pathways

GSTT1 influences the xenobiotic metabolism pathway and glutathione metabolism pathway. It interacts with proteins like CYP450 further facilitating the conversion of lipophilic substances into more water-soluble forms for excretion. These interactions play an important part in maintaining balance during detoxification processes. Such roles ensure the detoxification of a wide variety of harmful substances that could otherwise accumulate to toxic levels.

Mutations or deficiency of GSTT1 relate to an increased susceptibility to certain cancers and asthma. Such conditions arise due to compromised detoxification capability allowing potentially harmful compounds to damage cells and tissues. GSTT1 connects to proteins like GSTM1 another member of the glutathione S-transferase family wherein polymorphisms can compound susceptibility to disease emphasizing the enzyme's importance in predisposition to disorders.
