Biological function summary
The HBE protein contributes to the persistence of hepatitis B virus infection. It's part of the viral replication complex and helps maintain viral chronicity by repressing immune activation. The presence of HBE in the host leads to a reduction in the recognition of infected hepatocytes by the immune system allowing the virus to persist longer. Identifying the presence of 'HBE antigen' and 'anti-HBE' antibodies helps monitor the progression of hepatitis B infection. This antigen is a marker for active viral replication and infectiousness.

HBE integrates into the hepatitis B virus life cycle and immune response pathways. It involves the regulation of host immune responses particularly the adaptive immune system's recognition and clearance of infected hepatocytes.
