Biological function summary
Human concentrative nucleoside transporter 3 plays an important role in cellular uptake of nucleosides and nucleoside analog drugs. These substrates are necessary for nucleotide synthesis and DNA replication. hCNT3 is not known to be a part of a larger protein complex but collaborates closely with intracellular enzymes that process nucleotides. Its ability to transport therapeutic nucleoside analogs makes it significant in pharmacology particularly in the treatment of cancer and viral infections.
Pathways
Human concentrative nucleoside transporter 3 is an important component in nucleoside salvage pathways. This is important for nucleotide recycling within cells ensuring adequate supply of DNA and RNA precursors. hCNT3 also interacts functionally with other transporter proteins like hCNT1 and hCNT2 which handle different substrate specificities. This cooperation ensures a wide range of nucleosides are able to cross cell membranes demonstrating the integration of hCNT3 in broader nucleotide metabolic processes.
