Target data

Function

Packages the positive strand viral genome RNA into a helical ribonucleocapsid (RNP) and plays a fundamental role during virion assembly through its interactions with the viral genome and membrane protein M. Plays an important role in enhancing the efficiency of subgenomic viral RNA transcription as well as viral replication.

For more information, read more on recombinant antibodies.

This antibody clone is manufactured by Abcam. If you require a custom buffer formulation or conjugation for your experiments, please contact orders@abcam.com

Our carrier-free antibodies are typically supplied in a PBS-only formulation, purified and free of BSA, sodium azide and glycerol. The carrier-free buffer and high concentration allow for increased conjugation efficiency.

This conjugation-ready format is designed for use with fluorochromes, metal isotopes, oligonucleotides, and enzymes, which makes them ideal for antibody labelling, functional and cell-based assays, flow-based assays (e.g. mass cytometry) and Multiplex Imaging applications.

Use our conjugation kits for antibody conjugates that are ready-to-use in as little as 20 minutes with 1 minute hands-on-time and 100% antibody recovery: available for fluorescent dyes, HRP, biotin and gold.

This product is compatible with the Maxpar® Antibody Labeling Kit from Fluidigm, without the need for antibody preparation. Maxpar® is a trademark of Fluidigm Canada Inc.

Activity summary

The HCoV-229E Nucleocapsid protein also known as the N protein plays a mechanical role within the human coronavirus 229E (HCoV-229E). This protein has a mass of around 45 kDa and is expressed in the cytoplasm of infected host cells. Its primary function lies in binding to the viral RNA genome forming a ribonucleoprotein complex that protects the RNA and contributes to the stability of the viral genome. The HCoV-229E nucleocapsid protein is important for the correct assembly and packaging of the viral RNA into new virions.

Biological function summary

The N protein directly impacts viral replication and transcription. It forms part of a larger ribonucleoprotein complex that organizes the viral genome into a functional and protected structure. This complex interacts with other viral proteins to facilitate the replication process. The N protein also boosts the efficiency of the viral RdRp (RNA-dependent RNA polymerase) in transcribing the RNA genome ensuring that viral replication proceeds efficiently and effectively within host cells.

Pathways

The N protein integrates into the coronavirus replication-transcription complex. It coordinates with the viral RdRp and other non-structural proteins of the virus to ensure a streamlined replication process. This protein interacts with cellular pathways that include stress response and immune pathways potentially modulating host immune responses to benefit viral survival and replication. These interactions with host cell pathways may influence the efficiency of viral replication and the pathogenicity of the virus.

Associated diseases and disorders

HCoV-229E Nucleocapsid protein connects to common cold manifestations and in some cases exacerbates chronic respiratory disorders. The N protein’s interactions with other viral proteins like the Spike protein might enhance viral entry and infectivity which could contribute to varying severity of infection. Understanding the role of the N protein in these contexts is important for developing therapeutic strategies and improving disease management for infections caused by HCoV-229E.
