HEATR1 also known as HEAT repeat-containing protein 1 is a cytoplasmic protein with a molecular mass of approximately 166 kDa. The protein features several HEAT repeats which are tandemly arranged alpha-helical motifs. HEATR1 expresses in various tissues with high levels detected in the testes and lower levels in brain and lungs. The protein plays a role in cellular processes like protein trafficking and folding contributing to ribosome biogenesis and maintenance of cell cycle progression.

Ribosome biogenesis factor; required for recruitment of Myc to nucleoli (PubMed : 38225354). Involved in nucleolar processing of pre-18S ribosomal RNA. Required for optimal pre-ribosomal RNA transcription by RNA polymerase I (PubMed : 17699751). Part of the small subunit (SSU) processome, first precursor of the small eukaryotic ribosomal subunit. During the assembly of the SSU processome in the nucleolus, many ribosome biogenesis factors, an RNA chaperone and ribosomal proteins associate with the nascent pre-rRNA and work in concert to generate RNA folding, modifications, rearrangements and cleavage as well as targeted degradation of pre-ribosomal RNA by the RNA exosome (PubMed : 34516797).
