Supplementary information

Hepatitis B Virus X antigen also known as HBx protein or hepatitis X has a molecular mass of approximately 17 kDa. This antigen is expressed in liver cells or hepatocytes infected with the hepatitis B virus (HBV). HBx protein plays an important role in the replication and pathogenesis of HBV influencing the virus lifecycle and its ability to cause liver disease. Additionally anti-HBx antibodies such as 'anti HBx' and '3f6' are significant for research and diagnostic purposes due to their binding specificity.
Biological function summary

The function of HBx protein is to modulate various cellular processes to benefit the virus. HBx is not part of a larger protein complex but it interacts with host cell pathways to promote viral replication and survival. It influences transcriptional activation cell cycle progression and apoptosis. By hijacking the host cellular machinery HBx protein enhances viral replication and contributes to chronic infection.

Pathways

The activity of HBx protein impacts critical cellular signaling networks. HBx can activate the NF-kB signaling pathway which plays a role in immune response and inflammation. Additionally HBx influences the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway affecting cell proliferation and differentiation. Through these pathways HBx interacts with multiple other proteins including c-Myc and p53 impacting cellular homeostasis and contributing to oncogenic potential.

HBx protein is associated with hepatitis B-related liver diseases and the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). HBx contributes significantly to the progression from chronic hepatitis B infection to liver cirrhosis and HCC. The protein affects tumor suppressors like p53 further enhancing its role in carcinogenesis. Understanding HBx’s mechanisms continues to be important for developing therapeutics and diagnostics aimed at treating HBV-related diseases.
