Supplementary information

HHV-6 also known as Human Herpesvirus 6 is a DNA virus with a double-stranded genome and an icosahedral capsid. The alternate name for this virus is Roseolovirus. It expresses in various human tissues especially in peripheral blood mononuclear cells and is a member of the Herpesviridae family. The virion size of HHV-6 is about 200 nm. HHV-6 antibodies like HHV-6 IgG are useful for diagnosing infections in the laboratory setting.
Biological function summary

HHV-6 targets immune cells particularly T lymphocytes and integrates its genome into the host’s DNA where it establishes a latent infection. This virus does not usually form part of a complex. However it can reactivate in conditions where the immune system is compromised such as in individuals undergoing immunosuppressive therapy. HHV-6 influences the function of the immune system and impacts the host's cellular environment through modulation of cytokine expression.

Pathways

The virus impacts immune modulation pathways particularly by affecting the IL-6 signaling pathway. Its interaction with the host's immune response influences not only cytokines but also relations with proteins like CD46 which HHV-6 uses as a cellular receptor for entry into human cells. By engaging these pathways HHV-6 plays a direct role in lymphocyte function and immune evasion.

HHV-6 is linked to conditions such as roseola infantum causing fever and rash in young children and has been associated with more severe conditions like encephalitis in immunocompromised individuals. The virus’s connection with diseases ties to its influence on proteins within the immune system including triggering alterations in cytokine profiles that may worsen the disease outcome.
