Supplementary information

This supplementary information is collated from multiple sources and compiled automatically.

The heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein U-like 2 or HNRNPUL2 is an RNA-binding protein involved in multiple cellular processes. This protein has a molecular mass of approximately 85 kDa and shows expression in various tissue types at different levels. HNRNPUL2 plays a mechanical role in RNA splicing transport and stability. It operates mainly in the nucleus and influences the processing of pre-mRNA which is important for generating mature mRNA transcripts.
Biological function summary

HNRNPUL2 functions within the context of ribonucleoprotein complexes specifically linking with nascent RNA transcripts and directing their maturation. It assists in the orchestration of RNA transport to regions necessitating protein synthesis. Additionally it supports the nuclear retention of defective RNA preventing erroneous protein production. By functioning within these complexes it influences gene expression regulatory networks and modulates cellular response to stress.

Pathways

HNRNPUL2's activity integrates within major RNA processing pathways notably in mRNA splicing and export. These pathways facilitate the transition of RNA from the nucleus to the cytoplasm. It often interacts with other RNA-binding proteins such as HNRNPU and NXF1 to ensure mRNA transition is efficient. Through these interactions HNRNPUL2 coordinates the communication between splicing machinery and mRNA export systems securing the fidelity of gene expression.

Defects in HNRNPUL2 have been linked to certain cancers and neurodegenerative diseases. Abnormal regulation of HNRNPUL2 can result in mismanaged mRNA processing contributing to oncogenesis by influencing genes related to cell cycle and apoptosis. In neurodegenerative conditions HNRNPUL2 dysregulation is associated with Alzheimer's disease where altered RNA metabolism leads to neuronal dysfunction. The protein interacts with transcription factors and other components such as mRNA export machinery to exacerbate or mitigate disease progression indicating its critical role in maintaining cellular health.
