Biological function summary
HOXA2 functions in developmental processes acting as an important regulator in the formation of specific structures in the embryo. It operates as part of the homeotic gene complex which is essential for providing cells with positional information. HOXA2 establishes anterior-posterior identities and is particularly active in developing craniofacial regions. By orchestrating a network of downstream genes HOXA2 directs cellular differentiation and organization.
Pathways
HOXA2 is integral to the Hox gene cluster pathway which coordinates numerous aspects of embryonic developmental programs. It is deeply involved in the retinoic acid signaling pathway which influences morphogenesis and patterning during development. In these pathways HOXA2 works in concert with other Hox proteins such as HOXA1 and HOXA3 to modulate gene expression and help delineate segmental identities along the body axis.
