Supplementary information

This supplementary information is collated from multiple sources and compiled automatically.

HOXA2 also known as homeobox A2 is a transcription factor belonging to the homeobox gene family. It has a molecular mass of approximately 27 kDa. This protein is primarily expressed in embryonic tissues especially in the developing brain spinal cord and branchial arches. HOXA2 plays an important role in regulating gene expression during embryonic development where it is involved in patterning different body structures by controlling cell fate and identity.
Biological function summary

HOXA2 functions in developmental processes acting as an important regulator in the formation of specific structures in the embryo. It operates as part of the homeotic gene complex which is essential for providing cells with positional information. HOXA2 establishes anterior-posterior identities and is particularly active in developing craniofacial regions. By orchestrating a network of downstream genes HOXA2 directs cellular differentiation and organization.

Pathways

HOXA2 is integral to the Hox gene cluster pathway which coordinates numerous aspects of embryonic developmental programs. It is deeply involved in the retinoic acid signaling pathway which influences morphogenesis and patterning during development. In these pathways HOXA2 works in concert with other Hox proteins such as HOXA1 and HOXA3 to modulate gene expression and help delineate segmental identities along the body axis.

Mutations or altered expression of HOXA2 have connections to craniofacial abnormalities and congenital disorders. Congenital disorders such as microtia and cleft palate link to disruptions in the function of HOXA2. In these cases the interaction between HOXA2 and other developmental proteins like the DLX and PAX families affects the formation of facial structures resulting in anatomical defects. Understanding these interactions provides insight into developmental pathologies and potential targets for therapeutic intervention.
