The HOXA5 protein is a transcription factor known for its role in regulating gene expression. Alternate names include Homeobox A5 and it belongs to the cluster of homeobox genes. HOXA5 has a molecular mass of approximately 30 kDa. This protein is expressed in various tissues including the lungs kidneys and the developing spinal cord. Its expression shows spatial and temporal specificity during embryonic development.
Biological function summary

It functions as a part of the larger HOX family which comprises transcription factors that orchestrate body plan and segmentation. HOXA5 impacts cell differentiation and organogenesis. It modulates signaling pathways affecting processes like apoptosis and angiogenesis by activating or repressing genes depending on its expression level and cellular context.

It plays a critical role in the Wnt pathway by interacting with secreted proteins that regulate the pathway. Its deregulation has been implicated in the pathogenesis of lung cancer through its effects on cell proliferation and apoptosis. In congenital diaphragmatic hernia HOXA5's role in normal diaphragm development becomes evident when its function is compromised. The dysregulated expression of HOXA5 often shows linkage with proteins such as p53 highlighting a shared pathway contributing to oncogenic events.
