The HOXD8 gene also known as Homeobox D8 encodes a homeobox protein with a molecular mass of about 30 kilodaltons. It belongs to the homeobox family of transcription factors which are key in regulating gene expression during developmental processes. HOXD8 shows expression mainly in embryonic tissues and certain adult tissues including the limbs and the central nervous system. The expression pattern of HOXD8 suggests its involvement in limb formation and neural development.
HOXD8 is essential in providing positional information during morphogenesis where it operates as a transcription factor. It functions as part of the HOX complex—a group of related genes that determine the head-to-tail body plan of an organism during early embryonic development. The HOXD8 protein interacts with specific DNA sequences regulating the transcription of target genes that govern critical developmental pathways.
HOXD8 plays a significant role in the Wnt signaling pathway which influences cell fate determination during embryogenesis.
