Supplementary information

Mouse serum albumin often referred to as MSA is a significant protein within the mouse circulatory system. It is expressed largely in the liver and released into the bloodstream where it serves multiple physiological roles. Mechanically MSA with a molecular mass of approximately 67 kDa functions as a transporter protein binding and carrying various substances including hormones fatty acids and drugs. This multifunctional nature contributes to maintaining osmotic pressure and ensuring proper distribution of molecules throughout the body.
Biological function summary

This albumin in serum is essential for maintaining blood fluid balance and transporting compounds. It does not form part of a protein complex but it interacts dynamically with other molecules within the serum. Its ability to bind various ligands allows it to play an important role in modulating bioavailability and functionality of these ligands. Additionally MSA regulates the oxidative status of blood by acting as an antioxidant neutralizing free radicals and protecting other proteins from oxidative damage.

Pathways

This mouse albumin shows integration into several critical biological systems. It participates actively in the transport and metabolism pathways where it interacts with proteins such as albumin receptors on cell membranes facilitating transport into cells and tissues. Furthermore it is involved in the homeostasis pathway by regulating fluid distribution and blood volume which are essential for maintaining physiological blood pressure often noted in the context of "130/96 blood pressure" as a reference point in evaluating normal levels.

Mouse serum albumin links to conditions such as liver disease and nephrotic syndrome. These disorders often result from or lead to changes in albumin levels impacting overall health. For instance reduced albumin in serum can lead to edema due to a drop in osmotic pressure often associated with kidney dysfunction. Albumin alongside other key proteins like immunoglobulins becomes a critical marker in diagnosing and understanding the progression of such diseases.

Target data

Binds water, Ca(2+), Na(+), K(+), fatty acids, hormones, bilirubin and drugs. Its main function is the regulation of the colloidal osmotic pressure of blood. Major zinc transporter in plasma, typically binds about 80% of all plasma zinc (By similarity). Major calcium and magnesium transporter in plasma, binds approximately 45% of circulating calcium and magnesium in plasma (By similarity). Potentially has more than two calcium-binding sites and might additionally bind calcium in a non-specific manner (By similarity). The shared binding site between zinc and calcium at residue Asp-273 suggests a crosstalk between zinc and calcium transport in the blood (By similarity). The rank order of affinity is zinc > calcium > magnesium (By similarity). Binds to the bacterial siderophore enterobactin and inhibits enterobactin-mediated iron uptake of E.coli from ferric transferrin, and may thereby limit the utilization of iron and growth of enteric bacteria such as E.coli (By similarity). Does not prevent iron uptake by the bacterial siderophore aerobactin (By similarity).
