Biological function summary
HSV1 and HSV2 have significant roles in viral infection processes. They form complexes with host cell receptors to facilitate adhesion and entry into cells. Their glycoproteins interact with cellular proteins to trigger fusion and facilitate viral replication. During this process the viruses actively modulate the host's immune response enabling the evasion of immune detection. The ability to remain dormant and reactivate is an important aspect of their biology.
Pathways
HSV1 and HSV2 participate in cell entry and immune evasion processes. These viruses exploit the host's cellular machinery via the MAPK signaling pathway and the PI3K/Akt pathway to enhance viral replication and survival. The viral proteins ICP0 and glycoprotein D are essential for modulating these pathways. These interactions impact the immune response and cellular cycle regulation allowing the virus to maintain its presence within the host.
