HYAL1 also known as hyaluronidase-1 functions as an enzyme that catalyzes the degradation of hyaluronic acid into smaller oligosaccharides. It possesses a mass of approximately 57 kDa. This enzyme is expressed in various tissues including the liver spleen and kidney. HYAL1 plays an essential role in the turnover of extracellular matrix components impacting tissue remodeling and cell migration.

Hyaluronidase-1 facilitates the breakdown of hyaluronic acid a major component of the extracellular matrix affecting cellular interactions and signaling pathways. HYAL1 does not operate as part of a protein complex but acts individually. Its enzymatic activity influences processes such as cell proliferation tissue repair and inflammatory response as hyaluronic acid fragments modulate these cellular behaviors.

Hyaluronidase-1 engages in significant pathways involved in extracellular matrix organization and degradation.
