Intersectin 1 also known as ITS1 or intersectin is a multifunctional adaptor protein with a known mass of approximately 180 kDa. It plays a role in clathrin-mediated endocytosis by acting as a scaffold for the organization of various proteins involved in the process. Intersectin 1 is predominantly expressed in the brain but can also be found in other tissues like the heart and kidney. The presence of multiple SH3 domains and DH-PH domains facilitates its interaction with other proteins making it important for synaptic vesicle recycling.
Intersectin 1 functions as a central hub within signal transduction pathways by forming multimeric complexes. It associates with proteins involved in endocytosis such as dynamin and synaptojanin and coordinates cellular responses to external signals. Its role in actin cytoskeleton dynamics supports its involvement in cell migration and mobility. These functions are essential for normal neurological development and synaptic function.
Intersectin 1 integrates into signaling networks primarily within the endocytic and actin cytoskeleton regulatory pathways.
