ab190704 recognizes a protein of 14-16kDa, which is a novel nuclear antigen of proliferating cells. IPO 38 antigen is present in the nuclei of proliferating cells such as Hodgkin's disease and non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, different forms of leukemias, breast and colorectal carcinomas, and PHA-stimulated lymphocytes. It is not expressed in the cells of non-stimulated lymphocytes and granulocytes. IPO 38 can be a useful marker of cell proliferation during monitoring of tumor progression.

IPO 38 also known as Interphotoreceptor Retinoid Binding Protein (IRBP) is a protein involved in the transport of retinoids and fatty acids. It has a molecular weight of approximately 140 kDa. This protein is expressed in the retina and pineal gland where it plays a role in visual processes. The IPO 38 serves as a carrier facilitating the movement of essential molecules between the photoreceptor cells and the retinal pigment epithelium aiding in visual function.
IPO 38 functions as a significant player in the visual cycle. It interacts with both retinoids and lipids indicating its involvement in the visual signal transduction process. This protein associates with complexes that modulate the transfer of retinoids supporting the regeneration of 11-cis-retinal which is vital for the formation of the visual pigments in photoreceptor cells. It stabilizes retinoids within the interphotoreceptor matrix ensuring efficient transport and protection from degradation.
The protein plays an important role in both the visual cycle and the retinoid metabolic processes. In the visual cycle IPO 38 interacts with other proteins like rhodopsin to ensure light perception and signal transduction within the photoreceptor cells. By participating in the retinoid signaling pathway it helps facilitate the conversion of all-trans-retinol into 11-cis-retinal an active form necessary for vision. Its association with these pathways highlights its role in maintaining proper vision and retinal health.
Disruptions in IPO 38 function link to certain retinal dystrophies including retinitis pigmentosa and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). In these conditions dysfunction in the transport of retinoids and lipids leads to photoreceptor cell degeneration. The protein's interaction with rhodopsin plays a role in these disorders as any impairment in the pathway may contribute to the pathological state. Research into IPO 38 provides insight into therapeutic targets for combating vision loss associated with these diseases.
