Component of the nexin-dynein regulatory complex (N-DRC), a key regulator of ciliary/flagellar motility which maintains the alignment and integrity of the distal axoneme and regulates microtubule sliding in motile axonemes. Binds calmodulin when cellular Ca(2+) levels are low and thereby contributes to the regulation of calcium and calmodulin-dependent protein kinase IV (CAMK4) activity; contributes to the regulation of CAMK4 signaling cascades. Required for normal axoneme assembly in sperm flagella, normal sperm tail formation and for male fertility.

IQ Domain-Containing G (IQCG) is a protein known for its role in intracellular signaling. It presents alternative names including IQ motif-containing protein G. Its molecular weight is approximately 75 kDa. IQCG expresses mainly in testicular tissue suggesting a specialized function in reproductive biology. The protein contains conserved IQ motifs which indicate its ability to bind calmodulin and potentially influence calcium signaling related activities.
The processes involving IQCG impact regulation of spermatogenesis an important reproductive process. IQCG is part of a larger multi-protein complex that contributes to centrosome and cilium formation. By interacting with calmodulin it may modulate cellular responses to calcium fluctuations that are necessary for male germ cell division and differentiation.
IQCG integrates into the cilium assembly pathway and the calcium signaling pathway. These integrative roles suggest IQCG may collaborate with proteins such as centrin and calmodulin facilitating the proper assembly and function of cilia. Such interactions are critical for cellular processes like movement and cell cycle regulation highlighting IQCG's function in specialized cellular contexts.
Altered IQCG function associates with male infertility and some ciliopathies. Male infertility might link to disturbed spermatogenesis due to improper centrosome or cilium assembly. Additionally proteins such as centrin along with IQCG suggest possible mechanistic pathways of pathology within the context of ciliopathies where altered cellular structures contribute to disease development.
