IRX2 also known as Iroquois Homeobox 2 is a transcription factor involved in embryonic development. It has a molecular mass approximately 49 kDa and is a member of the Iroquois homeobox gene family. IRX2 is expressed in several tissues including the developing nervous system and heart. It plays a role in pattern formation and cell differentiation during early embryonic stages.
IRX2 functions as an important regulator of the transcription process during development. It is part of a family of Iroquois genes that form protein complexes to influence gene expression patterns. These complexes contribute to the establishment of regional identity in the embryo. IRX2 impacts limb neural and cardiac tissue development by interacting with other transcription factors in these regions.
Researchers have identified IRX2 as a participant in the Wnt signaling pathway and the Hedgehog pathway. These pathways are critical for the regulation of cell proliferation and differentiation. IRX2 interacts with proteins such as SHH (Sonic Hedgehog) and BMPR which are integral components in these pathways influencing developmental processes.
Evidence links IRX2 to congenital heart defects and certain types of cancers. Malfunctions in IRX2 expression levels or activity may disrupt normal developmental processes leading to these conditions. IRX2 interacts with proteins such as GATA4 in cardiac-related pathologies which further emphasizes its role in heart development and disease mechanisms.
