ISCA2 also known as Iron-Sulfur Cluster Assembly 2 is a protein involved in the assembly of iron-sulfur clusters essential for various cellular processes. This protein has a molecular weight of approximately 14 kDa. ISCA2 is expressed in numerous tissues including the heart liver and skeletal muscles. It plays a fundamental role in the synthesis of these clusters which are integral for electron transfer and enzymatic reactions.
The protein ISCA2 participates in the maturation of iron-sulfur cluster-containing proteins critical for mitochondrial function. As part of a larger complex ISCA2 collaborates with other proteins like ISCA1 and IBA57 to facilitate the transfer and insertion of these clusters into target proteins. This action supports the stability and functionality of key mitochondrial enzymes assisting in cellular respiration and redox homeostasis.
Iron-sulfur cluster biogenesis involves ISCA2 and integrates into critical pathways like the mitochondrial respiratory chain and the citric acid cycle.
