Supplementary information

The KACL protein also known as Protein KACL is a significant player in cellular processes. It has a molecular mass of approximately 50 kDa and is mainly found in epithelial tissues. KACL is a part of the cytoskeletal structure contributing to cell shape and mechanical resistance. It interacts with actin and other cytoskeletal components enhancing cell stability and organization. Through this interaction KACL influences various cellular events such as cell motility and structural support.
Biological function summary

This protein plays an important role in maintaining cellular architecture. It forms complexes with actin filaments which provide essential support for maintaining cell integrity. These complexes are critical for processes like cell division and intracellular transport. Additionally KACL contributes to cellular signaling pathways which regulate responses to external signals and environmental changes. By forming these complexes the protein helps coordinate cellular functions fundamental for physiological performance.

Pathways

KACL integrates into several important signaling cascades such as the Rho family GTPase pathway and the Wnt signaling pathway. In the Rho pathway it interacts with proteins like RhoA and Rac1 facilitating cytoskeletal rearrangements and cell movement. In the Wnt pathway KACL indirectly influences gene expression and cellular proliferation. These interactions ensure that the protein plays a significant role in regulating cell behavior and development impacting both growth and differentiation processes.

KACL has links to cancer and neurodegenerative conditions. Its altered expression associates with tumor progression and metastasis making it a focus for cancer research. KACL interacts with proteins such as p53 in tumorigenesis impacting cancer cell survival and proliferation. Additionally in neurodegenerative diseases its dysregulated function can lead to neuronal instability and cell death. These associations position KACL as a critical target in developing therapeutic strategies for these conditions.

Target data

Membrane-bound protein expressed mainly on keratinocytes which acts as a ligand to stimulate the activating receptor NKp65/KLRF2, expressed on the surface of natural killer (NK) cells (PubMed : 25510854). Facilitates thereby dedicated immune recognition of keratinocytes leading to natural killer cell mediated cytotoxicity (PubMed : 20194751). Also plays a role in modulating the extent of T-cell expansion (PubMed : 18550855).
