Biological function summary
Kallistatin participates in inhibiting angiogenesis and inflammation impacting cellular behavior and responses. As a serpin it functions uniquely in forming stable complexes with target enzymes like tissue kallikrein. Through this mechanism kallistatin contributes to maintaining vascular integrity and preventing excessive vascular growth or inflammation that could lead to pathology.
Pathways
The inhibitory effects of kallistatin integrate into the kallikrein-kinin system and the renin-angiotensin system. In the kallikrein-kinin system kallistatin regulates processes involving vascular tone and fluid balance. It interacts with proteins such as bradykinin mediating inflammatory responses and endothelial cell function through these key pathways.
