Supplementary information

KRT71 or Keratin 71 is a type II keratin protein that plays an important role in hair and skin structure. It weighs about 57 kDa and primarily expresses in hair follicles where it partners with other keratin proteins to form the intermediate filaments. These filaments provide mechanical strength and resilience to the cells in the hair shaft and contribute to the proper formation of hair structure.
Biological function summary

Keratin 71 functions in tandem with other keratins like KRT75 and KRT6. It forms heterodimer complexes important for hair filament assembly affecting texture and rigidity. This protein also participates in the wider architecture of the epidermis supporting skin barrier function. KRT71's proper expression and function ensure effective protection against physical and microbial insults.

Pathways

KRT71 integrates into structural pathways related to keratinization and cornification. In these pathways it partners with proteins such as KRT6A and KRT83 influencing cell adhesion and differentiation. These pathways maintain skin integrity and are essential for the self-renewal and repair processes of the epidermis and hair follicles.

Mutations or dysregulation in KRT71 expression have links to conditions like woolly hair syndrome and some hair shaft abnormalities. Research shows a connection with other keratins like KRT75 which can also affect hair texture and integrity. This highlights the necessity to understand KRT71's interactions in hair follicle biology for potential therapeutic approaches in dermatological disorders.
