LAD1 also known as Ladinin-1 is a 74 kDa protein prominently involved in maintaining the structural integrity of the basement membrane zone in epithelial tissues. LAD1 achieves this function by interacting with other structural proteins and contributing to the stability and adhesion of epithelial cells. This protein is expressed mainly in the skin but can also be detected in other epithelial-rich organs. While playing an important role LAD1 does not act alone; rather it works synergistically with cytoskeletal and extracellular components.
