Supplementary information

LHX5 also known as LIM Homeobox 5 is a transcription factor with a molecular mass of approximately 45 kDa. It plays an important role in regulating gene expression by binding to DNA sequences. This protein is mainly expressed in the central nervous system particularly in the developing brain and spinal cord where it influences neuronal differentiation and development.
Biological function summary

LHX5 contributes significantly to the development of the forebrain and hippocampus. It forms part of a molecular complex that controls the transcription of genes necessary for proper neuronal placement and differentiation. Through its interaction with co-factors LHX5 modulates the expression of downstream target genes involved in neurogenesis.

Pathways

LHX5 plays a role in Wnt signaling and neurodevelopmental pathways. It interacts with other proteins such as LHX1 and LHX2 helping to fine-tune the expression of genes involved in brain patterning and neural circuit formation. These interactions influence critical developmental processes ensuring appropriate neural network establishment.

LHX5 is linked to neurological conditions such as epilepsy and intellectual disability. Mutations or dysregulation in LHX5 may contribute to abnormal neural development leading to these disorders. Additionally LHX5 interacts with other proteins implicated in these conditions such as PAX6 potentially affecting the severity or outcome of the disease state.
