Supplementary information

Lhx8 known also as LIM homeobox 8 functions as a transcription factor with a molecular weight of approximately 31 kDa. This protein is part of the LIM homeobox family characterized by the presence of LIM and homeodomain motifs. Lhx8 is mainly expressed in the nervous system and reproductive organs. Expression of Lhx8 has been observed in neuronal tissue specifically influencing neural differentiation and development as well as in the gonads where it plays a role in reproductive system development.
Biological function summary

Lhx8 regulates the expression of genes involved in the differentiation of specific cell types. It plays an important role in early development and differentiation processes. Lhx8 participates in cell fate decisions directing stem cells towards specific lineages. It does not operate alone but forms complexes with other proteins including Lhx members to exert its effects on cell differentiation particularly in the nervous system and reproductive tissues.

Pathways

Lhx8 integrates into several important developmental pathways. It is notably active within the retinoic acid signaling pathway which guides cellular differentiation and development. Lhx8 also interacts with Wnt signaling a pathway essential for cell proliferation and fate determination. In these pathways Lhx8 might relate to proteins like β-catenin and other LIM proteins demonstrating its integrative role in facilitating precise developmental processes.

Lhx8 shows relevance in conditions such as infertility and neurodegenerative diseases. Abnormal Lhx8 expression or function has been linked to fertility issues highlighting its involvement in gonadal development. Lhx8's interaction with known neurodegenerative disease-related proteins like those of the retinoic acid pathway indicates its potential connection to neurodegenerative conditions. By understanding Lhx8's role researchers can decipher its contributions to these disorders aiding in potential therapeutic development.
