Supplementary information

This supplementary information is collated from multiple sources and compiled automatically.

LIMKAIN B1 also called LAS1L is a protein with a mass of approximately 35 kDa. The protein plays a role in ribosome biogenesis and is an essential factor in the nucleoplasmic assembly of pre-ribosomal particles. LIMKAIN B1 is mainly expressed in the nucleus of the cell where it associates with other ribosomal proteins and RNAs to ensure proper ribosome function and production.
Biological function summary

LIMKAIN B1 affects the production and assembly of ribosome components by associating with the Las1L complex. The protein’s activity is required for the processing of 28S rRNA highlighting its importance in ribosome maturation. This processing step happens in the final stage of ribosome biogenesis and disruptions in LIMKAIN B1 function can lead to the accumulation of unprocessed ribosomal RNA impairing the formation of functional ribosomal units.

Pathways

LIMKAIN B1 has significant roles in the ribosome biogenesis and cell proliferation pathways. The protein monitors rRNA processing and ribosome assembly within the nucleolus. LIMKAIN B1 works closely with NOL9 a protein involved in 28S rRNA cleavage to regulate the synthesis of ribosomes. Such coordination ensures that ribosome production matches the overall cellular demand for protein synthesis.

Mutations in LIMKAIN B1 are linked to certain types of cancer and ribosomopathies. Alterations in its function can lead to defective ribosome production contributing to the pathogenesis of ribosomopathies. In the context of cancer LIMKAIN B1 influences the expression of oncoproteins through its relation to Myc a protein that drives cell cycle progression and growth. This association highlights its potential impact on both cancer development and the regulation of cellular growth processes.

Target data

Essential regulator of oogenesis required for female meiotic progression to repress transposable elements and preventing their mobilization, which is essential for the germline integrity. Probably acts via some RNA metabolic process, equivalent to the piRNA system in males, which mediates the repression of transposable elements during meiosis by forming complexes composed of RNAs and governs the methylation and subsequent repression of transposons. Also required to protect from DNA double-strand breaks (By similarity).
