Activity summary

LMO7 known also as LIM-only protein 7 plays a significant mechanical role in cellular architecture and gene expression. This protein with a molecular mass of approximately 165 kDa not only localizes to the nuclear envelope but also to the cytoplasm. It is found in many tissues with higher expression levels noted in skeletal muscle and heart tissue. LMO7 contains LIM domains that facilitate protein-protein interactions important for its varied functions within the cell.

Biological function summary

LMO7 supports cellular integrity and function through its roles at the nuclear periphery. It interacts with nuclear and cytoskeletal elements contributing to processes such as nuclear shaping and stability. LMO7 participates in the assembly of the mechanotransduction complex at the nuclear membrane. This role links external mechanical signals to gene expression regulation involving other proteins in the complex and helping cells respond to mechanical stress.

Pathways

This protein integrates into the mechanotransduction pathway and the actin cytoskeleton signaling. It interacts with cellular components such as emerin and nesprin impacting cytoskeletal dynamics and nuclear positioning. In doing so LMO7 influences signal transduction pathways that affect cell migration and structural maintenance which represent important physiological functions.

Associated diseases and disorders

LMO7 associations appear in certain muscular dystrophies and cancer. Its interaction with proteins like emerin suggests implications in Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy a condition characterized by weakened skeletal muscles. Additionally altered LMO7 expression or function has connections to certain cancers where it may affect tumor suppressor pathways and metastatic potential linking it indirectly to aberrations in cell adhesion and motility.
