LSM10 also known as Sm-like protein LSm10 is a component of the LSm protein family with an approximate molecular mass of 10 kDa. This protein is ubiquitously expressed in various tissues playing a role predominantly in the nucleus. LSM10 is involved in the assembly and functioning of ribonucleoproteins related to its role in RNA processing and regulation.
Biological function summary

The role of LSM10 engages in RNA splicing and modification processes as part of a small nuclear ribonucleoprotein (snRNP) complex. Within the complex LSM10 contributes to the stability and assembly of snRNP particles facilitating the proper maturation of RNA molecules. LSM10's presence is critical for the formation of U7 snRNP which specifically addresses histone pre-mRNA processing and ensures efficient recycling and turnover of RNA.

Pathways

The protein functions prominently in RNA splicing pathways and histone RNA processing. LSM10 interacts with factors like LSM11 and other related proteins that assist in stabilizing RNA structures necessary for accurate gene regulation. The protein plays an integral role in connective pathways that facilitate histone mRNA transcription regulation and turnover involving partners such as the U7 snRNP complex and other splicing factors.

LSM10 exhibits links to conditions like spinal muscular atrophy and certain cancers. Alterations in the LSM10-related pathway might impact snRNP assembly influencing the molecular mechanisms behind these diseases. The protein connects to SMN1 known for its involvement in snRNP complex stability a factor critical in spinal muscular atrophy. Moreover aberrations in LSM10 activity or expression might contribute to cancer pathogenesis through disrupted RNA processing and gene expression regulation.

Target data

Appears to function in the U7 snRNP complex that is involved in histone 3'-end processing. Increases U7 snRNA levels but not histone 3'-end pre-mRNA processing activity, when overexpressed. Required for cell cycle progression from G1 to S phases. Binds specifically to U7 snRNA. Binds to the downstream cleavage product (DCP) of histone pre-mRNA in a U7 snRNP dependent manner.
