Supplementary information

Lysozyme C-1 also known as LYZ is an enzyme that plays a strong role in bacteriolysis by hydrolyzing the 14-beta-linkages between the N-acetylmuramic acid and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine residues of peptidoglycan in bacterial cell walls. This protein has a mass of approximately 14.7 kDa and is prominently expressed in a variety of tissues including secretions such as saliva tears and human milk as well as certain immune cells like macrophages and neutrophils.
Biological function summary

This protein acts in innate immunity by destroying bacterial cell walls helping protect against bacterial infections. It operates as a single polypeptide chain and does not require a complex to execute its function. Lysozyme C-1 contributes to the body's first line of defense by targeting and degrading peptidoglycans in the bacteria which can lead to bacterial cell lysis and a reduction in infection.

Pathways

This enzyme has a pivotal role in the immune response pathway specifically influencing the antibacterial pathways within the innate immune system. Lysozyme C-1 works in conjunction with other immune proteins such as lactoferrin and defensins to enhance antibacterial activity. Together they create a hostile environment for bacteria limiting their growth and survival which is critical in maintaining a balanced microbiota.

Lysozyme C-1 connects to conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Its altered expression or activity can disrupt normal bacterial flora or inadequate immune responses contributing to the pathology of these diseases. The protein defensin which also acts in antimicrobial defense often shows altered expression patterns in cases of such disorders indicating a relationship with lysozyme C-1 in disease progression and defense impairment.

Target data

Lysozymes have primarily a bacteriolytic function; those in tissues and body fluids are associated with the monocyte-macrophage system and enhance the activity of immunoagents.
