Supplementary information

MA2 also known as PNMA2 (Paraneoplastic Ma antigen 2) is a protein with a mass of approximately 57 kDa. It is primarily expressed in brain tissues and shows significant expression in neurons. The precise mechanism of action for MA2 involves its role in cellular processes that are yet to be fully detailed but its expression pattern hints at an importance in neuronal function. Furthermore due to its expression MA2 serves as an important target for researching neuronal diseases and autoimmune responses.
Biological function summary

MA2 plays an important role in the nervous system. It is part of a complex known as neuron-specific RNA-binding proteins which are critical for the regulation of mRNA transport and translation in neurons. MA2 interacts directly with other proteins within this complex to enable proper neural function affecting synaptic plasticity and neuron survival. This involvement suggests that MA2 has functions critical to maintaining normal neurological activity.

Pathways

The protein MA2 interacts with important signaling networks such as the MAPK/ERK pathway and PI3K/AKT pathway. These pathways are essential for neurodevelopment cell survival and synaptic functions. MA2's interaction with proteins like ERK1/2 and AKT suggests it plays a role in the modulation of these pathways impacting cellular communication and the overall neuronal response to external stimuli.

MA2 is associated with conditions such as paraneoplastic neurological syndromes and certain types of cancer. Anti-MA2 antibodies are frequently found in patients with paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis a condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks the brain tissue. Proteins like HuD also connect to MA2 through these neurological disorders as they share similar immune target profiles in affected individuals reflecting autoimmune responses contributing to disease pathology.
