Biological function summary
The function of Bet v 1 extends beyond simple pollen dispersion. This allergen binds to a variety of ligands including lipids and cytokinins and acts as a carrier for molecules within the pollen grain. Bet v 1 is not part of any complex; however its structure and binding capabilities have been analyzed extensively to understand its allergenic nature. This protein’s ability to interact with immune cells makes it a focus in allergenic studies helping to trigger the immune response upon contact with the mucosal lining of the respiratory tract.
Pathways
Bet v 1 plays a role in initiating immune pathways when it interacts with the human immune system. One important pathway is the IgE-mediated allergic pathway where Bet v 1 binds to IgE antibodies on the surface of mast cells and basophils. This interaction leads to the release of histamines and other inflammatory mediators. Bet v 1 is related to other pathogenesis-related proteins that also serve as allergens for example homologous proteins in different plant species like Mal d 1 from apple that share similar IgE-binding epitopes.
