Supplementary information

MCP-5 also known as CCL12 is a chemokine protein that plays a role in immune response by recruiting and activating leukocytes. It has a molecular mass of approximately 12 kDa. This protein is expressed mainly in tissues related to the immune system including the spleen and liver. MCP-5 exhibits a sequence homology with other members of the C-C chemokine family and shares functional similarities with MCP-1.
Biological function summary

MCP-5 takes part in promoting the migration of monocytes and lymphocytes to sites of inflammation. This chemokine is not a part of a complex but interacts with specific receptors on target cells such as CCR2. Through these interactions MCP-5 helps mediate a range of immune responses enhancing both innate and adaptive immune activities. It also contributes to the clearance of pathogens by guiding leukocytes to infection sites.

Pathways

MCP-5 plays an important role in the chemokine signaling pathway and the inflammatory response pathway. Through chemokine signaling MCP-5 interacts with CCR2 facilitating the movement of immune cells to areas of tissue damage or infection. This regulation of cell traffic is essential for maintaining homeostasis and responding to pathological changes in tissues. Another protein connected to MCP-5 in these pathways is MCP-3 which shares overlapping functions in immune cell recruitment.

MCP-5 has been implicated in conditions such as asthma and rheumatoid arthritis. In these disorders MCP-5 contributes to the recruitment of inflammatory cells worsening symptoms. It also shows a connection with other proteins like MCP-1 which similarly aids in the movement of monocytes to inflammatory sites. The presence and activity of MCP-5 and its related proteins can therefore represent potential targets for therapeutic interventions in controlling excessive inflammatory responses.

Target data

Chemotactic factor that attracts eosinophils, monocytes, and lymphocytes but not neutrophils. Potent monocyte active chemokine that signals through CCR2. Involved in allergic inflammation and the host response to pathogens and may play a pivotal role during early stages of allergic lung inflammation.
