MDFIC also known as MyoD family inhibitor domain containing is a protein that inhibits MyoD family of transcription factors. The mass of MDFIC is approximately 28 kDa. It plays a role in regulating gene transcription by binding to DNA and interfering with MyoD family members' ability to activate target genes. Researchers have detected MDFIC expression in various tissues with higher levels in the heart skeletal muscle and brain. MDFIC influences cellular differentiation processes in these tissues.
Biological function summary

MDFIC serves as a negative regulator in muscle cell differentiation by forming a complex with other transcription factors. This complex modulates the transcriptional activity of genes that manage muscle development and regeneration. MDFIC is involved in maintaining the balance between cell proliferation and differentiation ensuring that cells do not differentiate prematurely. This function allows tissues to grow and repair effectively.

Pathways

MDFIC participates in the regulation of myogenesis and signal transduction pathways. It interacts with the MyoD family especially MyoD and myogenin to modulate muscle-specific gene expression. Additionally MDFIC bears functional relevance in pathways involving nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-kB) where it shifts cellular responses to external stimuli like stress or inflammation.

MDFIC involvement extends to certain muscular dystrophies where dysregulation can lead to impaired muscle repair and degeneration. MDFIC's connection with MyoD family proteins is significant in these disorders contributing to the pathology of muscle weakness and wasting.
