Specificity

Ab33752 recognises a monomorphic determinant of rat MHC Class I (RT1A), expressed by all rat strains. However, quantitative measurements suggest that not all of the class I molecules are recognised.

Supplementary information

MHC class I RT Ia also known as RT1-A1 mechanically presents peptide antigens to CD8+ T cells. This protein has a mass of approximately 45 kDa. Expression of this protein occurs widely across various cell types including most nucleated cells. It plays an important role in the immune surveillance mechanism by displaying antigenic peptides on the cell surface for recognition by T-cell receptors.
Biological function summary

MHC class I RT Ia interacts with peptides within the endoplasmic reticulum and forms a complex with beta-2 microglobulin. This interaction is essential for the stability of the peptide-MHC complex on the cell surface. The formation of these complexes allows for immune recognition and establishment of immune responses. MHC class I RT Ia therefore plays an important role in initiating immune reactions against intracellular pathogens such as viruses.

Pathways

MHC class I RT Ia participates in the antigen processing and presentation pathway a fundamental aspect of adaptive immunity. It interacts with the transporter associated with antigen processing (TAP) proteins which transport peptides to the endoplasmic reticulum. Apart from that it also engages in the pathway involving cytotoxic T lymphocyte activation where it directly influences T-cell receptor signaling.

MHC class I RT Ia connects to autoimmune diseases like type 1 diabetes and ankylosing spondylitis. Variations in the genes encoding for MHC class I molecules may predispose individuals to these conditions. Additionally it’s associated with the HIV-1 virus where the virus may escape immune detection by downregulating MHC class I molecules presenting challenges in immune response which affect viral loads and disease progression.
