Biological function summary
MMP27 participates in the breakdown of proteins in the extracellular matrix. It does this as a monomer unlike some other metalloproteinases that form complexes. Although its specific substrate preferences are not completely characterized MMP27 likely interacts with proteoglycans and collagen influencing the structural components of cells and tissues. This enables various cell migration and differentiation events.
Pathways
Enzymes of the MMP family like MMP27 play roles in the connective tissue remodeling pathway and the immune response regulation pathway. In these pathways MMP27 interacts with other proteins such as TIMPs (tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases) which regulate its activity. The balance between MMPs and TIMPs is vital for maintaining tissue homeostasis and proper immune system function.
