MMP27 also known as matrix metallopeptidase 27 is part of the matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) family. This protein has a molecular mass of approximately 54 kDa. MMPs are known for their role in cleaving extracellular matrix components. MMP27 expresses in several human tissues including lymphoid organs like the spleen and lymph nodes. It involves in processes related to tissue remodeling and repair as well as immune functions.
Biological function summary

MMP27 participates in the breakdown of proteins in the extracellular matrix. It does this as a monomer unlike some other metalloproteinases that form complexes. Although its specific substrate preferences are not completely characterized MMP27 likely interacts with proteoglycans and collagen influencing the structural components of cells and tissues. This enables various cell migration and differentiation events.

Pathways

Enzymes of the MMP family like MMP27 play roles in the connective tissue remodeling pathway and the immune response regulation pathway. In these pathways MMP27 interacts with other proteins such as TIMPs (tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases) which regulate its activity. The balance between MMPs and TIMPs is vital for maintaining tissue homeostasis and proper immune system function.

Irregular expression or activity of MMP27 can relate to disorders like cancer and rheumatoid arthritis. MMP27’s role in degrading extracellular matrix components affects tumor progression and inflammation. In cancer it may interact with other MMPs such as MMP9 facilitating metastasis. In rheumatoid arthritis MMP27 could contribute to joint inflammation and destruction of cartilage interacting with cytokines that modulate inflammatory responses.
