Supplementary information

The MND1 protein also known by its full name Meiotic Nuclear Divisions 1 plays a mechanical role in the process of homologous recombination. Its molecular mass is approximately 25 kDa which is quite small. MND1 expresses in germ cells specifically during the meiotic phase of cell division. This expression has been noted in both male and female gametogenesis which is essential for proper chromosomal synapsis and disassembly.
Biological function summary

MND1 works alongside other proteins to ensure successful meiotic recombination. It often forms a complex with the protein HOP2 which enhances its function. This complex improves the pairing and alignment of homologous chromosomes during meiosis. Through this interaction MND1 influences genetic diversity by allowing the exchange of genetic material between chromosomes a necessary process for the formation of viable gametes.

Pathways

MND1 interacts within genetic recombination pathways that are important for accurate chromosome segregation. It performs important functions in the homologous recombination repair pathway. Specifically the MND1-HOP2 complex works closely with proteins such as RAD51 and DMC1 which are also involved in DNA repair and strand invasion during meiosis. These interactions facilitate the correction of DNA double-strand breaks ensuring stability and integrity of the genetic material.

Mutations or malfunctions in MND1 can lead to meiotic arrest and infertility. Research indicates that improper function or expression of MND1 may be implicated in certain cases of sterility in both males and females. The MND1-HOP2 complex has shown associations with these fertility issues highlighting its importance in normal reproductive health. Understanding the MND1 pathway could potentially lead to new insights into treatments for infertility issues.

Target data

Required for proper homologous chromosome pairing and efficient cross-over and intragenic recombination during meiosis (By similarity). Stimulates both DMC1- and RAD51-mediated homologous strand assimilation, which is required for the resolution of meiotic double-strand breaks.
