The human multidrug resistance-associated protein 6 (MRP6) also known as ATP-binding cassette sub-family C member 6 (ABCC6) or ARA serves as an important transporter protein. MRP6 weighs approximately 165 kDa and spans the cell membrane to transport various molecules out of the cell. This transport protein expresses highly in the liver and kidney tissues. By exporting certain substrates MRP6 plays an important role in managing cellular environments and protecting tissues from harmful substances.
Biological function summary

MRP6 contributes to the cellular management of organic anions and xenobiotics. It operates as part of the ATP-binding cassette transporters family using energy derived from ATP hydrolysis to drive the transport process. Isoform 1. ATP-dependent transporter of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) family that actively extrudes physiological compounds, and xenobiotics from cells. Mediates ATP-dependent transport of glutathione conjugates such as leukotriene-c4 (LTC4) and N-ethylmaleimide S-glutathione (NEM-GS) (in vitro), and an anionic cyclopentapeptide endothelin antagonist, BQ-123 (PubMed : 11880368, PubMed : 12414644). May contribute to regulate the transport of organic compounds in testes across the blood-testis-barrier (Probable). Does not appear to actively transport drugs outside the cell.
