Supplementary information

MRPL13 also known as mitochondrial ribosomal protein L13 plays an important role in mitochondrial protein synthesis. It is a component of the mitochondrial ribosome large subunit (39S). The molecular mass of MRPL13 is approximately 18 kilodaltons. This protein is primarily expressed in tissues with high energy demands such as skeletal muscle heart and brain. MRPL13 functions within the mitochondrial matrix contributing to the assembly and stability of the ribosome.
Biological function summary

MRPL13 facilitates the process of mitochondrial translation which is essential for the production of proteins encoded by the mitochondrial genome. MRPL13 forms part of the 39S subunit of the mitochondrial ribosome working alongside other ribosomal proteins to translate mitochondrial mRNAs. This activity is critical for the maintenance of mitochondrial function as mitochondria rely on their own protein synthesis machinery to support cellular energy production.

Pathways

MRPL13 plays a vital role in the oxidative phosphorylation pathway which is key for ATP production in cells. This pathway involves numerous proteins including cytochrome c oxidase and ATP synthase which work together to generate ATP from ADP. MRPL13 assists in the synthesis of mitochondrial components of oxidative phosphorylation ensuring efficient energy production. Its role in translation further connects MRPL13 to the regulation of mitochondrial biogenesis and energy metabolism within the cell.

MRPL13 has been linked to mitochondrial dysfunction and syndromes characterized by impaired energy metabolism such as mitochondrial myopathy and Leigh syndrome. Abnormalities in MRPL13 affect the assembly and function of the mitochondrial ribosome disrupting ATP production and leading to clinical symptoms. This protein might interact with other mitochondrial ribosomal proteins like MRPS22 to influence disease progression. Understanding MRPL13's involvement in these conditions can aid in developing therapeutic strategies targeting mitochondrial bioenergetics.
