MRPL14 also known as Mitochondrial Ribosomal Protein L14 plays a mechanical role in the mitochondrial ribosome as part of the large 39S subunit. The protein has a molecular mass of approximately 16 kDa. MRPL14 is expressed in the mitochondria and aids in protein synthesis within this organelle. This protein is essential for the proper assembly and stability of the mitochondrial ribosome which is critical for mitochondrial translation.
Biological function summary

MRPL14 is vital for the function of the mitochondrial translation complex helping to decode mitochondrial-encoded proteins. It may interact with other ribosomal proteins within the 39S subunit to ensure efficient protein synthesis. The mitochondrial ribosome including MRPL14 is responsible for translating mRNA that is encoded by mitochondrial DNA which is important for producing components necessary for cellular energy production.

Pathways

The MRPL14 protein plays an important role in processes such as oxidative phosphorylation and the mitochondrial biogenesis pathway. It is closely linked with other mitochondrial ribosomal proteins like MRPL3 within these pathways. These proteins together contribute to the synthesis of essential components of the electron transport chain which is directly involved in ATP production a critical energy source for the cell.

MRPL14 has been associated with mitochondrial dysfunctions that can lead to conditions such as mitochondrial myopathy and Leigh syndrome. These disorders often result from defects in mitochondrial protein synthesis where MRPL14 interacts with other mitochondrial ribosomal proteins like MRPS22. Abnormalities in the function of MRPL14 may disrupt the proper energy production in cells contributing to the pathophysiology of these diseases.
