Supplementary information

MRPL51 also known as mitochondrial ribosomal protein L51 is an integral component of the mitochondrial ribosome. It is involved in protein synthesis within the mitochondria. MRPL51 has a molecular mass of about 14.3 kDa. The protein is expressed in a wide range of tissues reflecting its fundamental role in mitochondrial function across different cell types. It localizes predominantly within the mitochondria indicating its direct involvement in mitochondrial protein synthesis.
Biological function summary

MRPL51 functions as part of the large subunit of the mitochondrial ribosome which is essential for the translation of proteins encoded by mitochondrial DNA. The protein is a component of a much larger ribosomal complex that assembles mRNA translation machinery specific to mitochondria. This complex plays a critical role in maintaining the functionality of mitochondria by ensuring the continuous production of proteins necessary for the electron transport chain and other mitochondrial processes.

Pathways

The ribosomal activity of MRPL51 connects directly to the oxidative phosphorylation pathway one of the most important for energy production within cells. The protein is associated with the synthesis of components essential for ATP generation. MRPL51 also relates to the mitochondrial translation pathway where it interacts with other ribosomal proteins to facilitate protein synthesis. Proteins like POLG the mitochondrial DNA polymerase and other subunits of the ribosome are also involved in these pathways illustrating an integrated role in cellular bioenergetics.

MRPL51 and its function are significant in conditions such as mitochondrial myopathy and neurodegenerative diseases. Defects in mitochondrial protein synthesis can contribute to these disorders as they result in impaired energy production. MRPL51's role in this context ties it to disorders where mitochondrial dysfunction is a factor. Additionally proteins involved in mitochondrial DNA maintenance and translation such as TFAM and TFB2M highlight the broader network of interaction that influences disease progression and manifestation.
