Biological function summary
MRPL51 functions as part of the large subunit of the mitochondrial ribosome which is essential for the translation of proteins encoded by mitochondrial DNA. The protein is a component of a much larger ribosomal complex that assembles mRNA translation machinery specific to mitochondria. This complex plays a critical role in maintaining the functionality of mitochondria by ensuring the continuous production of proteins necessary for the electron transport chain and other mitochondrial processes.
Pathways
The ribosomal activity of MRPL51 connects directly to the oxidative phosphorylation pathway one of the most important for energy production within cells. The protein is associated with the synthesis of components essential for ATP generation. MRPL51 also relates to the mitochondrial translation pathway where it interacts with other ribosomal proteins to facilitate protein synthesis. Proteins like POLG the mitochondrial DNA polymerase and other subunits of the ribosome are also involved in these pathways illustrating an integrated role in cellular bioenergetics.
