Supplementary information

MRPL55 also known as mitochondrial ribosomal protein L55 plays a mechanical role in the mitochondrial ribosome as a component of the large 39S subunit. This protein has a molecular mass of approximately 18.3 kDa. It is expressed primarily in tissues with high energy demand including the heart and skeletal muscles where mitochondrial protein synthesis is critical.
Biological function summary

MRPL55 contributes to the mitochondrial protein synthesis machinery and is a part of the mitochondrial ribosome complex. It helps maintain the structural integrity and function of the ribosome which is essential for translating mitochondrial-encoded proteins. These proteins are involved in oxidative phosphorylation a process vital for ATP production in cells.

Pathways

MRPL55 integrates into the mitochondrial translation pathway an important process for the assembly of the oxidative phosphorylation system. Relationships exist between MRPL55 and other mitochondrial ribosomal proteins such as MRPL3 and MRPL40 which together ensure proper mitochondrial protein synthesis. This pathway is intricately linked to energy production and metabolic regulation within cells.

MRPL55 has associations with mitochondrial disorders particularly those affecting metabolic functions. Deficiencies or mutations in MRPL55 can disrupt normal mitochondrial activity leading to conditions like mitochondrial myopathy. Disorders involving oxidative phosphorylation often see disruptions involving MRPL55 and related proteins such as MRPS16 underlining the protein's importance in maintaining mitochondrial function.
