The MRPS18B protein also known as mitochondrial ribosomal protein S18B is a component of the mitochondrial ribosome with a molecular mass of approximately 27 kDa. This protein is an integral part of the small subunit of the mitochondrial ribosome (28S) which plays a role in protein synthesis within mitochondria. MRPS18B is expressed mainly in tissues with high energy demands such as the heart and skeletal muscle given its function in energy production.
Proteins like MRPS18B are essential in maintaining mitochondrial function. MRPS18B operates within the ribosomal complex enabling the translation of mitochondrial-encoded genes necessary for proper cellular respiration. This role is critical for ATP production which supports numerous cellular processes. It shares functional similarities with other mitochondrial ribosomal proteins and together they ensure the synthesis of key components of the oxidative phosphorylation machinery.
MRPS18B plays a significant role in the mitochondrial translation pathway. This pathway is important for the production of proteins encoded by the mitochondrial genome which are vital for the oxidative phosphorylation pathway. MRPS18B collaborates closely with other mitochondrial ribosomal proteins to facilitate accurate mRNA translation and is indirectly linked to the expression of proteins in the electron transport chain such as cytochrome c oxidase.
Abnormalities in MRPS18B expression or function can impact mitochondrial efficiency and have been connected to mitochondrial diseases such as Leigh syndrome. This syndrome is a neurodegenerative disorder that severely affects energy production in cells. MRPS18B also shows a relationship with Parkinson's disease where mitochondrial dysfunction plays a pivotal role with interactions noted between MRPS18B and proteins involved in mitochondrial maintenance such as PINK1 and Parkin.
